Learning Exposure for Agriculture Interns

Indrasarowar Rural Municipality has initiated a 9-12 Level Agriculture School which is based at Kalika Secondary School, Phakhel Village. For the Nepalese community, such technical schools produce academic para professionals who could directly join and engage in jobs once they complete their education. Local governments have applied such ideas so that they could mobilize the graduates in their own locality and even in their municipalities.

Indrasarowar Village is also one of the renowned place where nearly 90% people are relying in agriculture. In this context they need many technical manpower who could help the community to upgrade the agriculture system, bring a drastic change and also handle the movement in the area. As we know, many farmers have been doing agriculture with traditional ideas, in the sense of subsistence farming. Such system make them busy but gives less production.

Shikharapur CLC (SCLC) has been partnering with Kalika School since 2019 with the great help of our partner ONGD-FNEL Luxembourg. SCLC’s main mission is to empower the school team, create a agriculture learning environment and also utilize the land that is available in the surrounding of the school itself.

SCLC has been managing the internship of agriculture learning students in a residential way. This year 16 students are residing at Bottle House Agriculture Project for their field based learning. During their time at SCLC, they would practice their academic ideas in field, further, they will also explore their ideas in a team. SCLC also provides different skill development lessons, learning exposures, different trainings etc. The interns learn techniques of group work, self reliance, creative thinking, presentation, writing etc.

On, 26th June 2022, SCLC organized a Field Exposure for the interns. The participants got opportunity to visit Namuna Mahila Multipurpose Cooperative and Dairy Firm, Kevin Roham Memorial Eco Foundation (KRMEF) and also a model farm run by a local woman. Mrs. Parwati Lama, Chairperson of Namuna Cooperative shared her experiences, stories, struggles and also relate the challenges with the success they have achieved till today. She encouraged the student to start entrepreneurship once they complete their education. She discouraged the students from going abroad for general labor jobs.

“I’m really happy that schools have started such agriculture studies, in our time we do not have such institution where we could learn practically. I think these students are lucky enough. All the best to all of you.” said Mrs. Lama

Students got to meet Mr. Krishna Gurung, Founding Chairperson of KRMEF, winner of BBC World Challenge 2008 (1st Runner up). Mr. Gurung is extensively working in promotion of biodynamic farming. He has been leading the organization where they work for the agriculture, sustainable construction, disaster preparedness, women empowerment and entrepreneurship etc. Mr. Gurung gave a presentation to show up the present status of Nepal in agriculture, its contribution and the scenario of future.

“Agriculture is the only sector from where we get our food. We do not have any other option. I request all of you to spent your life in agriculture study and production. We have a good future in this sector. Thank you all for choosing agriculture study.” said Mr. Gurung.

Further, the students visited a local farm of Mrs. Maya Lama. Mrs. Lama is an active woman who is working for the betterment of society. She wants to build her own entrepreneurship and would like to serve the community in her own. She also encouraged our participant visitors.

Finally, we could say, the visit went so well. It became really fruitful for our students learning. We hope the team is inspired and they would follow the steps of the model entrepreneurs.
