Successful Orientation about Government Service Enrollment

Event Report on Orientation for Government Jobs

On 5th of November 5, 2022, Shikharapur Community Learning Centre organized a half-day orientation about government services at the Balcony Hall of Shikharapur Campus, Pharping. The target audiences were students from Bachelor’s level as well as graduates from Grade 12 that can apply for such job placements. This program was organized with the objective of motivating the youth to apply for the government jobs of Nepal as well as to help them become the resource person in order to help spread the information.

Going overseas in search of employment has become popular among Nepalese people, particularly young ones. People are willing to make huge financial investments in order to travel abroad and are ready to take any sort of job during their stay. The purpose of this initiative was to inspire young people about the variety of respectable and community-beneficial jobs that are available to them right in their own country.

The chief guests included the Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communication – Dr. Baikuntha Aryal, the Undersecretary of Ministry of Finance – Mr. Mohan Singh Basnet, the Undersecretary of Office of Auditor General – Mr. Ramesh Singh, the chairperson of Dakshinkali 5 – Mr. Shyam Bahadur KC, Mr. Bijay Kumar – from Ministry of Home Affairs, Sashi Sharma Aryal – the chief advisor of SCLC and Mr. Niroj Shrestha – the chief of Shikharapur Campus and the project manager at SCLC.

During the program there were some highlights that were said by the speakers. Mr. Aryal said that “Achievement of government jobs is not impossible. However, it is not an easy task. You must have zeal. You need to study and prepare from your heart. You can achieve anything if you do it sincerely from your heart (Dil se)”. Similarly, Mr. Bijay Kumar said that “We can only succeed if we give it our all and are completely committed to our goal.” Mr. Ramesh Singh also shared an inspiring statement: “To achieve the goal, we must overcome many obstacles, but we must not be disappointed and quit; rather, we must embrace ourselves and try again and again. Likewise, according to Mr. Mohan Singh Basnet “We can achieve our goal despite any difficult situation if we are persistent.”

The program officially started from 8.30 am in the morning with the Event Coordinator and Secretary of SLCL, Nisha Bisunke, as the emcee. Then, the audience was welcomed by the conference head Mr. Shyam Bahadur KC. The objectives of the program were highlighted by Mr. Niroj Shrestha. It was a lecture-based program by the guest speakers which included Mr. Bijay Kumar, Mr. Ramesh Singh, Mr. Mohan Singh Basnet and Dr. Baikuntha Aryal, who shared their experiences of struggle and dedication, failure and success while achieving the dream. They also shared some tips on preparing for the Loksewa exams such as tuitions and training, institutions, interview as well as group and reading newspapers regularly. In addition other information regarding 33% quota for women and online training for Loksewa.

Moreover, they also shared their motivations for working hard for Loksewa in order to inspire the youth. One of the reasons was their feeling of wanting to pay the nation back for what they had received. Other reasons included their desires to bring changes in their community and the nation at policy level. They highlighted the fact that there used to be a high number of civil servants from Pharping but in the present context these numbers are decreasing. This issue is what led to the initiation of this program. It may be due to the reason that the youth often like to take the easy route and are highly impatient with expectations of quick money, instead of working hard. Lack of desire to remain in their country due to brain drain is also quite prevalent.

It was concluded that due to lack of knowledge, the youth are confused regarding the opening of posts as well as application procedure for Loksewa and other government job-related chances. If the information is made accessible, it may increase the number of people applying for civil service positions, which will eventually aid in policy making and benefit the community as well as make the networking of the community stronger. The speakers also added that they would be glad to give the students further advice and guidance the upcoming days as well.

Although the program was successfully completed and provided many helpful tips, there were some points that could have made the program even more fruitful. The program started a little late for some reason, and in order for the program to run smoothly, it must be started on time. It would have been preferable if the speaker had used various presentation techniques and  methods to share their ideas and knowledge rather than just a lecture. An interactive program that also prioritized participant questions would have been even better as well. The ideas that speakers shared were extremely beneficial, however, it would have been even more beneficial if they had also shared relevant links and handouts to the participants so that they could refer to it for an easier understanding and access of further information on the topic. Overall, this program was an excellent example of community sentiment and development as it demonstrated enthusiasm and active participation for the upliftment of one’s own community.
