“We do not learn from experiences, we learn from reflecting back at them.” -John Dewey.

The goal of every student is to learn from what we see, study and practice. Our experiences shape us as who we are. Being a social work student, the major focus of our study is the society, it’s structure, maladies and utilization of various theories and methods for its betterment.  Understanding the concept and putting all the theories into practice is a major challenge, but that is what we get to view and understand and practice during field visits. Everything fascinates us and influences our thoughts. Going beyond regular life and viewing the world from a wider perspective really does create a better and broader vision.

Shikharapur Community Learning Center (SCLC) is a collection of innovative ideas, active individuals and farsighted leaders. The projects were fascinating and their inclusion practices has really transformed the community as a whole. The whole SCLC family welcomed us warmly and provided us with their valuable time. Niroj Shrestha Sir, the Campus Chief of Shikharapur Community Campus and also the Project Coordinator of SCLC/ONGD-FNEL Project was with us throughout the day. He gave us proper guidance and insight about the project. Everything was encouraging us students to make a better future of each community in Nepal. Even a small idea that started with just 5 people can bring such changes to community not to mention the casteism, discrimination, inequality and conservative mindset of the time it started in. The SCLC family stands out as an example of what will power, proper planning, implementation and innovation can do and how the marginalized groups can be included.

The goal is not just to provide temporary support but permanent solutions to the problems in the community. To hear the voices that have remained unheard forever isn’t an easy task but SCLC is a bright example of how proper effort can yield positive results.  From online doctor counseling during the pandemic to women empowerment, this community learning center has benefited every group. Bottle house, which is eco friendly, easier and cheaper to make is a sustainable option for people who require shelter. Thinking about it would have done nothing but executing it and making it come true is a great step to move forward.

I along with the faculty and students of St. Xavier’s College Maitighar wish prosperity, sound progress and growth to the team of SCLC. We hope that this project expands to more areas and helps people learn about entrepreneurship and independence. I would like to thank the team of SCLC for their warm hospitality, and a well rounded session that allowed me along with my fellow classmates to see the practical aspect of our theoretical learnings. We had a pleasant time at their facility, and the opportunity to learn and practice our learnings is truly a privilege. Lastly, I would like to thank our college for facilitating this visit and giving us the opportunity to witness the impact of honest social work at SCLC.  Thankyou.

Sincerely,
