Marking International Day of Women and Girls in Science and Technology

Shikharapur Community Learning Centre (SCLC) and Rukmini Foundation jointly established a Digital Class (Computer Lab) within the new building of Agriculture Learning Resource Centre (ALRC). ALRC is established in great support of Bagmati Province Government, Dakshinkali Municipality, ONGD-FNEL Luxembourg, many well-wishers and development stakeholders.

On 11th February 2023, Mr. Mohan Basnet, Mayor of Dakshinkali Municipality, inaugurated the Digital Lab in a digital way. The opening of Digital Class on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science has been a great way to celebrate the contributions of women in the field of science and technology and to encourage more girls and women to pursue careers in these areas. Deputy Mayor, Ward Chairperson, Elected representatives, organization/schools representatives and many other beneficiaries participated the opening event.

An ICT lab provides access to cutting-edge technology and resources that can help girls and women develop their skills and knowledge in the field of technology. This can help them to become more competitive in the job market and contribute to the development of technology and innovation.
Having an ICT lab dedicated to women and girls can help to create a supportive and inclusive environment where they can explore their interests and pursue their passions in technology. It can also provide opportunities for mentorship, networking, and collaboration with other women in the field.
Overall, opening an ICT lab on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science would be a great way to recognize the important role that women play in the field of technology and to encourage more girls and women to pursue careers in these areas.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science is observed on February 11th each year to recognize the critical role that women and girls play in science and technology communities and to encourage their participation in these fields. The theme for the 2022 International Day of Women and Girls in Science is “Women Scientists at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19.” It highlights the important contributions of women scientists in responding to the pandemic, including leading research, developing vaccines, and providing medical care.

The day aims to promote full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls, and to support gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in science and technology fields. Despite progress in recent years, there is still a significant gender gap in the STEM fields, and this day serves as an important reminder of the need for continued efforts to address this imbalance and promote diversity and inclusiveness in science and technology.

Lastly, SCLC collaborates with Rukmini Foundation for this computer lab development. Considering both organizations mission, our collaboration will help not only the beneficiaries of Dakshinkali Municipality but also addresses the demand of surrounding villages. It will also cooperate to train computer to the famers, teachers, elected people representatives, members of Community Development Units, Government staffs and so on. The centre will open from 10.00am to 5.00 pm. The training and the facilities are provided for free. The centre will be further utilized for online classes/trainings and also would be of great help for upcoming web portal development for agriculture entrepreneurship associated with ONGD-FNEL – SCLC project.
