UNESCO Nepal Representative Mr. Jaco visits Shikharapur CLC

Dakshinkali, November 13, 2025 — Shikharapur Community Learning Center (SCLC) welcomed Mr. Jaco du Toit, UNESCO Representative to Nepal, and Dr. Dhruba Raj Regmi, Chief of Education at UNESCO, for an insightful field visit showcasing SCLC’s long-standing contributions to education, empowerment, and sustainable community development. A three-member team from Good Neighbors International Nepal led by Ms. Anita Thapa also accompanied the visit.

The visiting team observed a range of SCLC’s activities, including the Bottle House Eco-Sustainable Project, the Agriculture Learning Resource Center (ALRC), the organic farming and animal husbandry program, and the vermi-composting project. They interacted with Open School participants, women’s groups, beneficiaries, and staff, gaining firsthand understanding of the center’s grassroots initiatives.

Mr. Mohan Basnet, Mayor of Dakshinkali Municipality, also addressed the ceremony. He warmly welcomed H.E. Jaco du Toit and the visiting team on behalf of the municipality. In his remarks, he praised SCLC’s best practices and community-centered approach, expressing gratitude to UNESCO for continuously empowering SCLC through various projects, exposures, and learning opportunities. He further thanked UNESCO for consistently inviting Dakshinkali Municipality to participate in programs and events conducted in partnership with Shikharapur.

During the session, Mr. Niroj Shrestha, Director of SCLC, delivered a brief presentation highlighting UNESCO’s significant contributions to Shikharapur’s overall development—especially in advancing community learning, literacy initiatives, and capacity-building programs.

Addressing the audience, Mr Jaco  shared valuable insights on lifelong learning, community leadership, and the importance of locally-led development. He remarked:
“Shikharapur CLC is a powerful example of how education, innovation, and local commitment can drive lasting change. The community’s dedication here truly reflects the spirit of sustainable development.”

The Program Manager of Good Neighbors International  also expressed appreciation for SCLC’s long-standing community initiatives and thanked the team for the warm welcome.

To honor the visit, Shikharapur CLC presented Mr. Jaco du Toit and GNI Team with a special token of love, a beautifully handcrafted piece made by a local artist—symbolizing community pride and gratitude.
